Checking in, as I do every so often to be read by nobody...
A few interesting comics of more use, literary and artistic value have popped before me, but as I have said I have a vague idea of doing an "quasi - Archie jaded fan" blog, even as I rarely buy anything, and so to pop into this vein:
The last issue of Jughead's Double Digest published the first issue of Jughead, circa 1949, which was cool, and which I of course bought due to this fact. I realized that this early - 1950s era of Jughead comics has been actually relatively minable and reprinted by the folks at Archie Comics, so it's a somewhat familiar style. (Well, it is Samm Schwartz. Betty and Veronica of that period doesn't have the virtue of being Dan Decarlo). So, Jughead #1 had two, count them TWO, wacky inventions which lead to a "Herbie Rides Again" style kooky football victory stories. Go figure.
The new issue? It looks completely irredemable.
Two items of interest:
Insane re-touching updating editing job. (I have countless examples of this that swirl in my mind.)
AND... Um... Hm...
I was lucky enough to spend some time with Dan, and I learned a bit about him through an interview I did for a fanzine ages ago — I’ll have to find the tape of the interview. I remember at one point he asked me to turn off the recorder, and with his raspy voice asked if I remembered the times that Archlie would fall asleep with Betty or Veronica in the car with them, and they next scene would be the following morning. I said, of course. He said, everytime that happened, they had sex — and laughed hysterically. I was amazed…i need to go back and re-read my comics, I thought.
Interesting, no?
